‘A teenage entomologist’s club goes beyond the borders of Burgdorf

These children love nature, adore studying insects, plants, and the surrounding world. Recently, they joined the School of Entomology, newly established by the Association Ukraine Schweiz Bern in Burgdorf.

The trip to the ‘Papiliorama’ was organized to foster closer acquaintance among the students and with the ‘inhabitants’ of this institution. The teenagers were accompanied on their trip to ‘Papiliorama’ by certified experts in botany and biology, scientists Marina Hetmanova and Maria Parkhomenko. They also conduct lessons at the School of Entomology. The trip was co-funded by the Association Ukraine Schweiz Bern and the Red Cross.

“We didn’t expect such a high level of interest in the excursion,” admits Marina Hetmanova. “Due to the limited number of seats, not everyone could join, but this will encourage them to follow our announcements – we often publish such opportunities.” At ‘Papiliorama,’ the Swiss group shared their experiences and spent considerable time with local children, sharing fascinating facts about the place.

‘Papiliorama’ showcased a vast variety and number of species and presented its history and functionality. “The most impressive thing,” the children said, “was that the entire reserve recreated real jungles in the middle of Switzerland. It was interesting not only to look at the animals but also to learn about their multi-layered ecosystem.” The children were particularly amazed by the butterfly exhibition and its abundance. They fluttered around and fascinated the children with their appearance. The students were highly engaged, eagerly observing, asking questions, and collecting information. It was wonderful that among them were children who maintained closer ties with the butterflies. After this excursion, the children are eagerly anticipating the next one.
