The joint initiative “How to Bern”, led by the Swiss Red Cross Youth Canton Bern and USB, continues to create connections between young people in the Canton of Bern. The project brings together Swiss youth and young migrants to explore the city, share experiences, and build friendships in an open and inclusive environment. A recent gathering at Eichholz brought together volunteers from both the SRK and USB teams, along with a diverse group of young participants. The event combined informal socialising, outdoor activities, and group discussions, offering a relaxed space.
Participants highlighted how valuable it is to meet peers in a low-pressure setting, practice language skills, and gain confidence navigating life in Bern. For many young migrants, such encounters are an important step toward faster integration, helping them better understand local culture while also sharing their own backgrounds. Volunteers from both organisations emphasized that the project is not only about support, but also about mutual exchange. Swiss participants gain new perspectives, while newcomers feel welcomed and included. This two-way approach helps break down barriers and fosters genuine understanding.
A key theme of the Eichholz event was celebrating diversity. Through conversations, games, and shared moments, participants experienced how cultural differences can enrich a community rather than divide it. Many expressed motivation to stay involved and attend future meetups. The “How to Bern” project continues to run regular activities, typically twice a month, offering young people ongoing opportunities to socialise, discover Bern, and grow together. It stands as a strong example of how grassroots collaboration and volunteer engagement can make integration more human, dynamic, and impactful.
