We understand each other: ‘The creeping occupation of Crimea’

Svitlana Prokopchuk, Media Coordinator of the Association Ukraine Switzerland Bern, wrote a column for Journal B about the annexation of Crimea and everything that preceded it.

‘In March 2014, the whole world learnt how it is possible to come to the territory of another state, seize it and say that it is ‘restoring historical justice’. Then to hold a so-called ‘referendum’, ban protests, bring Russian teachers to schools so that ‘lessons about important things’ would bring results in the form of Russianised heads of Ukrainian children. The annexation of Crimea has been going on for 11 years. It was preceded by a ‘creeping occupation’. However, the Crimean Tatars have already been deprived of their home once before – they survived genocide during mass deportation to Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Russia. And before that, they were under the Russian Empire, which did its best to destroy their national identity.
