Participating in the European study of the rights of Ukrainian refugees in Bern

USB is honored to be part of the study 'Vulnerability and Resilience to Human Trafficking and Exploitation Among People Fleeing Ukraine in Berlin, Bern, and Warsaw.' The project was completed this week.

The study was conducted by the Mixed Migration Center with support from the Danish Refugee Council and the United Nations. It focused on human trafficking and the illegal importation of migrants under wartime conditions in Ukraine. The study was conducted in three European cities - Berlin, Bern, and Warsaw. USB acted as a subcontractor for fieldwork in Bern. The Swiss government also supported this study as part of initiatives on migration and human rights in the context of the war in Ukraine. The first phase of the study (quantitative survey) was completed in 2023, and the second phase (qualitative research) was completed in the summer of 2024.

Reports are available here: General report: https://mixedmigration.org/.../345_Vulnerability-and... For Bern (Quantitative Research 2023): https://mixedmigration.org/.../283_Displaced-from-Ukraine... For Bern (Qualitative Research 2024): https://mixedmigration.org/.../displaced-from-ukraine-to...

The study revealed a relatively low level of rights violations and significant challenges related to integration. Most cases of discrimination were associated with employment and housing (often due to legal shortcomings). Isolated cases of sexual exploitation were also identified. Among Ukrainian men, there were cases of illegal border crossing. The most vulnerable groups identified were women and Roma who fled Ukraine, marked as particularly vulnerable categories in terms of access to rights and protection. Researchers recommend seeking support through social networks and among communities that inspire trust in official structures.
