"With you, Europe has become stronger": words of support to Ukrainians on World Refugee Day from the UN Representative in Strasbourg, Andreas Wiessner

On June 20, the world celebrates World Refugee Day — a day of solidarity, support and recognition for the millions of people who have been forced to leave their homes due to war, persecution or violence. On this occasion, the USB Association spoke with Andreas Wiessner, representative of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to the European institutions in Strasbourg. In his address, he shared sincere words of support for Ukrainians who have found refuge in Europe.

"Ukrainians in Europe, you have been very resilient, and I want to congratulate you also on behalf of Unitoria for your strengths and for the contribution you make to the society that receives you.", — said Mr. Wissner. “I think that with you, Ukrainian refugees, displaced persons in Europe, Europe is a more colorful, a better place.”

These words are not only a recognition of the courage and endurance of millions of Ukrainians, but also a confirmation of how deep a mark they leave in the hearts of European societies. Despite the fact that many of them were forced to leave their native home, they prove every day that even in forced emigration it is possible to maintain dignity, strength of spirit and bring benefit to the new community.

"Unfortunately, this is not your home," he added. "But you are very welcome in most of your countries, and I think it is a great experience for everyone. You are part of an international community that works with host countries to make sure your rights are respected."

Concluding his address, Andreas Wiessner expressed sincere hope for peace: "I would like to wish that the war will end very soon, and that many of you will be able to return to your homeland. And that those who have put down roots here will be able to exercise their rights and build a life with respect and dignity. I wish you all the best, especially on the occasion of World Refugee Day."

These words are not just a formality. They are a reflection of the respect that Ukrainians have earned in the eyes of the world. And while the war continues and millions remain far from home, it is important to remember: support, solidarity and recognition are of great importance. Migrants are not asking for help - they are looking for a chance to realize themselves in a new reality.
